The ASIDN-RPA Coding Manual has been completely updated for 2017 and is now available on the ASDIN website. Many thanks to the Coding Workgroup led by Dr. Gerald Beathard, the ASDIN Public Policy Committee and the Renal Physicians Association (RPA) for a lot of hard work in making these revisions – which are almost a complete re-writing of the manual. There are many changes in coding this year so it is critical to carefully review the manual to ensure that you are coding correctly.
A few of the changes include:
Use of new bundled codes 36901 – 36909 which replace many of the old component codes
Changes in angioplasty coding
No “arterial” angioplasty within the dialysis access including arterial anastomosis
New bundled code for arterial angioplasty separate from the dialysis access
Different codes for central venous angioplasty depending upon whether the approach (site of cannulation) is in the dialysis access or a separate vein (i.e. femoral vein)
Changes in stent coding also based upon whether done through dialysis access or not
Changes in selective catheterization
New codes for moderate sedation which are separately reportable
Others too numerous to mention…
The changes in coding take effect January 1, 2017.
