The 7th Annual ASDIN Scientific Meeting concluded February 13, 2011. This two day event held in Las Vegas Nevada was packed with information and energy. Over 400 physicians, nurses, administrators and others came to learn, network, and share information. The meeting was our largest yet.
The meeting began with the 2nd Annual Advanced Interventional Techniques course on Friday, February 11th including both didactic and hands on sessions. With over 75 physicians in attendance, this pre-course was a great success. Techniques discussed and practiced included coiling, stent placement, renal artery angioplasty, and use of snares. Two new excellent simulators we used to teach renal artery angioplasty and stent placement. These greatly enhanced the realism and educational value of the hands on session.
The Scientific Meeting began on Friday evening with a welcome reception in a large exhibit hall. Many ASDIN industry partners and exhibitors were on hand that evening and throughout the meeting to demonstrate innovative new products and services meant to improve patient care. The scientific sessions ran all day Saturday and half day on Sunday. Topics included catheter issues, angioplasty, the role of stents, graft issues, fistula issues, arterial disease, vascular biology, basic and clinical research, peritoneal dialysis, vascular ultrasound, international collaboration, quality improvement, and public policy issues.
Lectures were given addressing legal issues such as device development, patents, and handling adverse events. The President of the RPA addressed the audience on the coming healthcare reforms and their impact on interventional nephrology. An excellent abstract and poster session ended with cash awards given to the top three presenters in each. Several breakout sessions were offered including: case presentation for nurses and techs, case presentation for physicians, novel gadgets, and an administrators’ session. Attendees always appreciate the opportunity to learn and interact in these smaller group settings.
Two physicians were recognized for their important contributions to the society with ASDIN’s top honors: Donald Schon, MD received the ASDIN Lifetime Achievement Award and Ken Abreo, MD received the ASDIN Distinguished Service Award. These individuals have worked tirelessly for ASDIN in several key roles and are greatly deserving of this recognition.
It is safe to say that attending the 7th annual ASDIN scientific meeting was no gamble – though the venue provided ample opportunity for evening enjoyment. The date and location for the 8th Annual Scientific Meeting in 2012 will be announced soon. Stay tuned … you won’t want to miss it!
