	FASDIN Class of 2027 Application Process is OPEN! Apply April 1, 2026 - July 31, 2026 Please email lfox@asdin.org with any questions regarding eligibility. GENERAL INFORMATION: $300 Application Fee New class of Fellows will be recognized at ASDIN Meeting Designation valid while ASDIN membership is current. If membership lapses within a year, member must reapply for fellow status. COMMON CRITERIA REQUIRED OF ALL “FELLOWS”: Board certified in your specialty (matches training) Active membership in ASDIN including continuously for at least previous 3 years Attendance at least 1 of previous 3 ASDIN annual meetings CRITERIA DEMONSTRATING EXPERTISE (Must have 3 of 11 during the previous 6 year period unless differing timeframe specified within criteria below.) Serve on ASDIN Council or documented participation on an ASDIN committee for a period of at least two years Serve as an active JVA editorial reviewer for a period of at least two years or a reviewer of dialysis access/diagnostic imaging for a comparable publication to JVA Continuing Medical Education(CME) - Complete a total of 40 hours of dialysis access, diagnostic imaging or radiation safety related AMA PRA Category 1 CME credits during the past two years (certificate documentation required Hold at least one active ASDIN certification in HVA, PD, Renal Ultrasound, Basic POCUS, POCUS of Dialysis Access or pAVF Hold an extramural grant for research related to dialysis access or diagnostic imaging Publish at least 1 article in a peer reviewed journal related to dialysis access or diagnostic imaging Present at least 1 podium or rapidfire abstract at ASDIN Meeting or present at an ASDIN-Sponsored webinar Demonstrate active teaching activity of students, residents or fellows related to dialysis access or diagnostic imaging for at least 30 hours during the past two years (Letter from applicable program director is required) Serve as Principal Investigator in at least 1 clinical trial related to dialysis access or diagnostic imaging Provide a CME-approved lecture about dialysis access or diagnostic imaging in a regional, national, or international scientific meeting Actively serveonboardorcommitteeofa recognized national or internationalorganizationrelatedto kidney disease, dialysis access or diagnostic imaging for three years (Letter of verification required from organization)

Interventional Nephrology Day is Wednesday, December 17

December 17th is Interventional Nephrology Day, a celebration of the specialty and the specialty's impact on dialysis patient outcomes.

Help us commemorate the day by:

Recognizing interventional physicians with a note of gratitude or acknowledgment.
Recognizing access center staff with an appreciation coffee break or lunch.
Encouraging commemoration in dialysis units and access centers - encourage patients to write a note to their interventional physician. Post these on an IN Day Wall in the unit or center.
Posting about the profession and the commemoration on all your social media channels featuring individual interventional nephrologists and examples of their impactful work. Use #InteventionalNephrologyDay. Feel free to use the IN graphic and/or the IN Day graphic in this email blast.
Hosting a lunch-and-learn showcasing best practices or case studies.
Using IN Day to promote the specialty and encourage residents and fellows to pursue Interventional Nephrology as a career path.


	ASDIN chose December 17th as Interventional Nephrology Day to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Gerald Beathard – founder of Interventional Nephrology. This is one way that we can honor his pioneering contributions. Dialysis access has always been a major issue affecting dialysis patient outcomes, quality of life, and mortality. Nephrologists were referring patient to other specialties when access failed. Dialysis patients were given less priority than others which resulted in delayed treatment, frequent hospital stays, and use of catheters. The desire to improve dialysis patient care, concerns for the welfare of dialysis patients, and an unwillingness to accept the status quo gave rise to an interest and involvement in the planning and management of dialysis access starting in the mid-1980s. Dr. Beathard and many others played a pivotal role in providing a NEW continuum care for dialysis patients. Their efforts gave rise to a new subspecialty of nephrology referred to as Interventional Nephrology. Today the management of dialysis access by nephrologists has come to be recognized as a standard of care and the subspecialty of Interventional Nephrology has become recognized worldwide.

	Based on the ASDIN Awards Committee selection process, ASDIN members have the opportunity to participate in nominating their peers for ASDIN’s prestigious awards: Gerald Beathard Award Presented in recognition of teaching excellence, scholarly activity, and clinical excellence Lifetime Achievement Award Presented in recognition of overall contribution to interventional nephrology Distinguished Service Award Presented to individual who has provided distinguished service to ASDIN Associate Recognition Award Presented in recognition of dedication and commitment to ASDIN by an Associate Member When making nominations, please review our previous award recipient listing to insure a past recipient is not nominated again. Also, please note that a 200 word (1500 character) narrative in support of each nomination is required. The recipient of the Gerald Beathard Award will serve as the Gerald Beathard Lecturer and present the keynote presentation on a topic of their choosing at the ASDIN Annual Scientific Meeting each year. Final selection of these awards will be made by the ASDIN Council who will determine which awards will be given each year. All award recipients will be notified in advance of their selection. Nomination deadline is Monday, October 6, 2025.

Murphy Introduces Bipartisan Legislation to Protect Medicare for Physicians and Patients

Washington, D.C. — Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. issued the following statement after introducing the bipartisan Medicare Patient Access and Practice Stabilization Act, to support physicians and protect access to care for Medicare beneficiaries.

"America's physicians are at a breaking point and access to high-quality, affordable care is at risk for millions of Medicare patients,"said Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D."When a physician sees a Medicare patient, they do so out of the goodness of their heart, not because it makes financial sense. Medical inflation is much higher and the cost of seeing patients continues to rise. Unfortunately, reimbursements continue to decline, putting immense pressure on doctors to retire, close their practices, forgo seeing new Medicare patients, or seek a less efficient employment position. This bipartisan legislation would stop yet another year of reimbursement cuts, give them a slight inflationary adjustment, and protect Medicare for physicians and patients alike."

"Medicare payments to physicians are just not keeping pace with our economic realities and the cost of care," said Congressman Jimmy Panetta. "Our bipartisan legislation would not only prevent harmful cuts but also would adjust provider reimbursements for inflation. Such a law would expand seniors' access to quality healthcare by helping medical providers continue their care for Medicare beneficiaries."

"Access to quality healthcare is a something every senior deserves, but declining Medicare reimbursement is putting that access at risk," said Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks. "The bipartisan Medicare Patient Access and Practice Stabilization Act is crucial to reversing the damaging trend of cuts that threaten our healthcare providers, especially in underserved communities. We must act now to prevent further burnout and consolidation in our system, ensuring that every Medicare beneficiary receives the care they need and deserve."

"Having an outdated Medicare reimbursement rate for physicians makes it harder for healthcare professionals to provide high-quality care, putting patients at risk,"said Congressman Ami Bera, M.D. "Physicians, unlike the rest of the players in health care, have never received an inflationary update and consistently received cuts. This bill ensures a more stable Medicare payment system, allowing providers to focus on delivering care rather than worrying about losing their practice. With this bipartisan effort, we are working toward a system that supports both patients and doctors."

"All patients deserve timely access to healthcare from quality physicians in their communities," said Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. "Inadequate Medicare reimbursement threatens that access. I have long fought to correct the current trend of cutting reimbursement levels year after year, and I am proud to join my bipartisan colleagues to introduce the Medicare Patient Access and Practice Stabilization Act. The current path toward further consolidation, physician burnout, and closure of medical practices must be corrected."

"Over the past 22 years, adjusting for inflation, physicians have essentially taken a 26% pay cut from Medicare," said Congresswoman Kim Schrier, M.D. "Their reimbursement has been flat or declining, while overhead costs have increased by about 47%: rent, labor, equipment, and insurance. I cannot think of another profession whose compensation has dropped by 26% over 2 decades. Physicians have been holding their breath, year after year, hoping that Congress will act to avert these devastating decreases in reimbursement. Without adequate reimbursement, solo and small practice physicians—most often in rural or underserved areas—are already closing their doors. It’s up to Congress to ensure that physicians are fairly compensated and can continue to practice, so that all Medicare patients have access to high-quality, affordable care, and I am proud to co-sponsor legislation that will achieve just that."

"As a physician, I recognize that year after year cuts to Medicare reimbursement jeopardizes access to care for our nation’s seniors," said Congressman John Joyce, M.D. "We must work in Congress to create a more sustainable long-term solution to ensure that Medicare patients continue to receive the high-quality affordable care that they deserve. While we continue this important work, I am proud to co-lead the Medicare Patient Access and Practice Stabilization Act, in order to protect access for Medicare beneficiaries and support Medicare physicians in the face of these proposed cuts."

"As an emergency medicine physician, I know how important it is for families and individuals I serve to have access to the necessary health care services they rely on," said Congressman Raul Ruiz M.D. "I am deeply concerned about the impact the outdated Medicare reimbursement rate has on health care access for my constituents. That is why I am co-leading the 'Medicare Patient Access and Practice Stabilization Act' that will move us away from a system where every year seniors’ access to essential care is threatened due to potential cuts."

Background

In July 2024, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed a rule that would decrease Medicare reimbursement for physician services by 2.8% beginning on January 1, 2025. Compounded with CMS’ own estimates of a projected 3.6% increase in practice cost expenses for next year, physicians will be faced with an 6.4% cut unless Congress acts.

According to the American Medical Association, when adjusted for inflation, Medicare reimbursement for physician services has declined 29% from 2001 to 2024.

Medicare reimbursement cuts for physicians have significant ripple effects across our health care system, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

The decline in reimbursement rates, while wages and operational costs continue to rise, is forcing many physician practices to consider layoffs, reduced services, or office closure.

At a time when we’re facing a physician shortage and a historic number of doctors are nearing retirement age, these cuts risk accelerating physician burnout and reducing access to care for Medicare patients.

ASDIN Advocacy Flash - Update on endoAVF Coverage

	As a member of the Dialysis Vascular Access Coalition (DVAC), ASDIN has learned that several major payers and a number of minor insurance companies have adopted non coverage policies for percutaneous fistula creation (CPT codes 36836 for Ellipsys and 36837 for WavelinQ). In response to the recent ASDIN blog posts, here are copies of the Humana national non coverage policy and the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas non coverage policy along with a grid showing non coverage of pAVF creation or in cases where we have been successful in reversing decisions it is noted. All Blue Cross regions except Michigan, Massachusetts and their Highmark product in Pennsylvania, Delaware and West Virginia which will cover Ellipsys but not WavelinQ. Here is a non coverage list as of August. Please let us know if you have other payers who are not covering this procedure so we can add them to our list. Medicare has coverage for pAVF creation through the new CPT Category 1 codes as noted above and we are not seeing Medicare coverage or payment issues. Most Medicaid plans will cover pAVF but the amounts are usually less than $2,000. Medicare Advantage plans are allowed to create their own Medical Policies if there is no Medicare Local or National Coverage Decision (which there are none for pAVF creation). Terry F. 	Based on the ASDIN Awards Committee selection process, ASDIN members have the opportunity to participate in nominating their peers for ASDIN’s prestigious awards: Gerald Beathard Award Presented in recognition of teaching excellence, scholarly activity, and clinical excellence Lifetime Achievement Award Presented in recognition of overall contribution to interventional nephrology Distinguished Service Award Presented to individual who has provided distinguished service to ASDIN Associate Recognition Award Presented in recognition of dedication and commitment to ASDIN by an Associate Member When making nominations, please review our previous award recipient listing to insure a past recipient is not nominated again. Also, please note that a 200 word (1500 character) narrative in support of each nomination is required. The recipient of the Gerald Beathard Award will serve as the Gerald Beathard Lecturer and present the keynote presentation on a topic of their choosing at the ASDIN Annual Scientific Meeting each year. Final selection of these awards will be made by the ASDIN Council who will determine which awards will be given each year. All award recipients will be notified in advance of their selection. Success Is Just Running Out of Mistakes, a new book by Stephen R. Ash, MD, FACP, has been released by Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc.

Success is Just Running Out of Mistakes is about a life-long quest to improve the therapy of kidney failure, especially with hemodialysis technology. Dr. Ash began to write this because of a lack of progress in dialysis therapy. He is tired of physicians and politicians saying that there is a "lack of innovation" among nephrologists. The problem isn't lack of innovation, but rather a failure to commercialize radically better new technology. In some ways the book is also a collection of 12 case studies of new technology and ideas and how a small technology-driven firm can succeed or fail in efforts to bring their new product to become a widespread market success. There are few textbooks that describe not only successes of R&D companies in bringing products to the market but also failures. What is surprising about the failures described in this book is that they occurred at many different steps of bringing a new product to market.. The answer to a physician who says "I have a new idea and think it could help medical therapy. What should I do next?" is very long and complicated.

The one trait Success is Just Running Out of Mistakes really demonstrates is the importance of persistence. Not just in any one project, but in a career trying to make just one small part of medical therapy better for patients with kidney failure. Too many young physicians don't realize the tough road ahead to make medical therapy better and quit after the failure of their first good idea. As Winston Churchill said, "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts."

About the Author

Stephen R. Ash, MD, FACP, recently retired from clinical practice as a Nephrologist at Indiana University Health Arnett in Lafayette, Indiana. He is CEO of HemoCleanseTechnologies, Chairman of the Board of AshAccess Technology, and co-founder of a number of spin-off biotechnology firms. He has a long history of research and product development in the field of sorbents, resulting in devices for treatment of kidney failure (AllientTM by Renal Solutions) and for liver failure (Liver DialysisTM by HemoTherapies). He was instrumental in development of an orally ingested sorbent for potassium (now marketed by AstraZeneca as Lokelma®). Dr. Ash has also invented a number of new catheters for dialysis access, including the Ash Split Cath®, CentrosFLO® and AdvantageTM PD Catheter.

Dr. Ash is a co-founder and Past President of the American Society for Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology (ASDIN). He is Past President of ASAIO and until recently served as Secretary-Treasurer of IFAO. He is recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from ASDIN, the Celebration of Life Honor by NKF of Indiana, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Annual Dialysis Conference.

Dr. Ash also has a dedicated and loving family, including his wife Marianne, and daughters, Emily and Sarah. Marianne and Dr. Ash are long term members of Trinity United Methodist Church in Lafayette, Indiana. They live at and operate a retirement/recovery farm for horses, and his special interests are fixing things around the farm, woodworking, and flying fixed wing RC aircraft.

PD (Peritoneal Dialysis) University for Interventionalists provides a two-step approach to training Interventional Nephrologists and Interventional Radiologists to place catheters for peritoneal dialysis using image guided techniques. The first step is a series of comprehensive lectures covering all aspects of creating and maintaining PD access. The second step is Hands on Training Course with stations designed to provide the interventionalist with a comprehensive overview of placing PD catheters. The first step is required to advance to the Hands on Training portion.
