Training for Nephrology Fellows for ACGME Required Nephrology Knowledge

LECTURES and DIDACTIC SESSIONS - Sessions with subject-matter experts

PRE- and POST- WORKSHOP ASSESSMENT - To evaluate skill acquisition and identify areas for improvement

Objectives:
• Outline principles of long-term vascular access planning and vein preservation
• Identify appropriate timing and modality for initiating access workup
• Interpret vein mapping & learn why a surgeon uses specific materials for access creation
• Accurately name various vascular accesses
• Perform a structured 4–5 point physical exam on AVFs and grafts
• Learn how ultrasound is used to assess access maturity
• Apply knowledge of pathophysiology to recognize signs of inflow/outflow problems and thrombosis
• Interpret clinical presentations using physical and ultrasound-based assessments
• Decide when to refer for imaging, intervention, or conservative monitoring
• Learn about different needles, principles of cannulation, cannulation injuries
• Manage common complications in PD, including drainage issues, infections, and mechanical problems
• Learn different techniques of PD catheter placement
• Learn the basics of the cycler and how to change from a Baxter to Liberty transfer system
• Manage common complications & infections associated with tunneled catheters
